Where are you?
We are just off the South Circular A205, in Forest Hill, near Honor Oak, Peckham, New Cross, Crystal Palace and Catford. Here’s how to find us.
-
Do you have free parking?
Yes, we have one free parking space to the rear of the studio and there is free and unrestricted parking in Kemble Road and all the surrounding side roads.
-
Does food waste get recycled after my shoot?
Yes, our refuse collection contract means all our waste gets sorted at the depot and food waste is recycled along with anything else which can be, like card, paper, glass and metal. There are small food waste bins and compostable bags for use on the countertops.
-
Do you provide tea towels?
Yes, and oven gloves, and you can use as many as you like. Please just leave them in a pile at the end of your shoot. They are in a drawer in the island.
-
Is Kemble House a sustainable business?
We try! We use environmentally-friendly cleaning products wherever possible, and the tea towels are always washed using environmentally-friendly Smol pods. The coffee pods we buy for the Nespresso machine are compostable. We donate a small portion of every hire fee to the World Land Trust, so every hire saves a piece of wilderness the same size as the studio. As above, we pay for food waste recycling and comprehensive regular recycling. We have a local Whatsapp group to try and minimise food waste after shoots, and if you have unopened long-life foods left over, let us know and we will take them to the local food bank. We welcome feedback, so if you can think of anything else we could do to minimise our footprint, let us know.
-
Can I use the cambo stand?
Absolutely, everything in the studio is free for you to use during your shoot.
-
How do I move the cambo stand?
To move the arm up and down the cambo’s central column, push the lever inwards, adjust the height and pull the lever back gently to fix the arm in place. Be careful not to over-tighten the levers, as this can damage the internal mechanism. Just a gentle turn is all that’s required. You can move the cambo, but take care as the beams mean that you may need to tilt it to move past them. Do ask us to move it in advance if you prefer. If you do need to move it to a different area, follow these steps and do it with at least two people:
– Move the boom arm to the top (so the heavy counterweight is at the bottom).– Position the two green foam pads under two corners.– With two people, tilt the Cambo (don’t lie it flat as the internal weights will shoot out)and slide it to the next section of the studio.– Make sure the cable is taught before setting it straight. -
Can I use your props and backgrounds?
Yes, please do. All props and background are free to use, there is no extra charge. Our more practical kitchen equipment is all in the drawers (and hidden drawers inside drawers) and cupboards in the kitchen, while the more photogenic props are on the shelves. Backgrounds are in a rack against the walls and fabrics, including vintage tea towels and several aprons, are alongside. Smaller props, like teaspoons, serving spoons, drinking straws and cutlery are all in the vintage green cabinet by the front door.
-
Can I leave my gear behind if I am hiring you for more than one day?
Yes, although we do recommend cameras and computers are taken home at night. The yard gates are locked at night and we have a motion sensitive alarm system and internal security cameras.
-
Do I need to clean after my shoot?
We very much appreciate you leaving the studio more or less as you found it in terms of the furniture and any props you’ve used, but we have cleaners who come in after every shoot and event to do the floors, bathroom and kitchen.
-
Do you have a bathroom?
We have our own bathroom with a loo and wash basin.
-
Can I black out the windows if I need to?
Yes, there are black plastic sheets with magnetic edges leaning up with the poly boards. These fit onto each window. Both doors are fitted with blackout curtains. (If you are using flash, please black out the windows, as otherwise the flash bounces into the windows of the recording studio next door!)
-
Can I adjust the heating?
The heating runs on the Hive system, so you can crank it up via the thermostat on the wall next to the bathroom door, or we can control it from our phones if you prefer – so just ask us. In winter, all the radiators should be set to maximum.
-
Do you have air conditioning?
We do! If it is forecast to be very hot, we will set up the air conditioning before you arrive in the morning and you can keep it on or turn it off as needed. If the aircon is on, the windows and doors need to be kept closed in order for it to work properly. We also have several fans which are kept offsite – if you need them, please do ask.
-
What kitchen equipment do you have?
Lots! Rebecca is the author of 14 cookbooks, and so we try to keep the kitchen as full as possible of useful things. Our kitchen equipment includes: a Smeg double range cooker, American-style fridge and freezer, a Smeg electric induction hob on the island, a Bosch multi function kitchen machine (including blender, mixer etc), Kitchenaid stand mixer, food processor, a hand blender, a nutribullet, a Kenwood Microwave, instant-read food probe thermometer, oven thermometers, knives and peelers, graters, pots, pans, griddle pans, frying pans, multiple chopping boards, and many, many utensils. There are oven trays and racks in a hidden drawer under the oven. There is equipment in the cupboards on the table side of the island, as well as in the kitchen units. (If you require any equipment beyond what is listed please do ask.) Instructions for all equipment, the hob and oven, are all in the large drawer underneath the induction hob. If anything is missing, or you need something particular, call Rebecca (07977 294938).
-
Do you provide tea and coffee?
We do, and also biscuits. We have Nespresso pod coffee machine, a milk frother, a Sage espresso machine and a drawer full of caffeinated and decaf options, including teas and hot chocolate. You will also find biscuits there, too. We keep jars of snacks on hand for any mid-afternoon pick-me-ups needed, too. (Because of allergies and dietary needs, we don’t usually provide milk, but the shops over the road sell a full range of options.)
-
Can you help me put together a shoot team?
We can definitely help you out. We know stylists, food stylists, event caterers, make-up artists, prop houses where you can hire props, photography assistants, digi ops and post-production assistants, and we can help you hire lighting and other equipment. Steve is also a food, drink, portrait and interiors photographer, should you need one of those.
-
Can you help me get my gear, props or food delivered?
We work with an excellent courier company which mainly works for studios and photographers. They are trusted partners and we have known them for years, so they can access the studio at any time. Please ask if you’d like their details.
-
Do I need insurance to shoot or host an event at Kemble House?
You do. Like all studios, we need to know you have public liability insurance in advance of your hire. We can recommend a couple of companies which organise very inexpensive one-off event or shoot policies, if you don’t have an annual policy.
-
Can I have props or food delivered before my shoot?
Yes, please just contact one of us beforehand to arrange timings. We don’t charge for deliveries outside your booked hours.
-
Can I stay later than I planned to?
If your shoot over-runs, feel free to stay on. We charge over-time on an hourly basis. Please let us know as soon as you know you will be staying late, because our lovely cleaners usually arrive at about 6.30pm. If you hire us for an event like a dinner, you can stay later than planned to clear up, but your guests must have left by 11pm, and any music must be off by 10.30pm.
-
I need to get a large prop into the studio. Is that possible?
With some advance planning, yes! The biggest prop we’ve had so far was a large double sofa, and we got that up the stairs and in through the double doors with no drama.
-
Can I get lunch delivered?
Totally. Our local favourites are Banh Banh (Vietnamese) Lolo Poke, Matoom (Thai), Tonkotsu (Ramen), Mama Dough and Bona (Pizza) and Meatliquor (Burgers). We also love the jerk chicken and curry goat from Lavish, and Flower Sushi, both just over the road.
-
Can I decorate the studio for my event?
Yes and we’d love to see photos afterwards. The beams look great decorated with lights, flowers or bunting. (We don’t allow painting unless you’re paying to paint it back afterwards.)
-
Can I move the table?
You can move anything as long as you put it back where it was beforehand. The oak table is not like a normal table as it comes apart into four pieces: the top is two separate planks and the base is two trestles. The wooden top pieces are very tightly fitted into the trestles, so best to have two people, one at each end and lifting each one separately.
-
Is there anywhere I can set up a pizza oven?
You can set it up either at the top of the stairs on the outside landing (if it’s something small like an Ooni) or if you need a bit more space, use the area at the bottom of the stairs, next to the brick wall. (Please don’t set it up under the stairs.)
-
I want to start shooting really early. Can I?
You can set your start time whenever you would like. If it’s your first time, one of us will come and visit during the morning to make sure you have found everything.
-
Can I make videos at Kemble House?
The space has been used for filming without any noise issues. However, you may like to do a site visit in advance of booking for filming as occasionally aircraft pass overhead, the studio is located in an industrial yard with other businesses and there is a fire station fairly close by. We are not sound-proofed, so the studio works best if you don’t mind ambient sound or will be putting a soundtrack over your video. We want you to get what you need from your hire, so we will tell you if we think we are not the right location for your project.
-
Do you do half days or an hourly rate?
Unfortunately we don’t do half days or hourly rates.
-
If I am hosting an evening event, how late can I stay?
Guests need to leave by 11pm.
-
I need to change my booking, is that possible?
Please contact us if you need to make changes to your booking. If you cancel at very short notice, we may need to charge a cancellation fee (we will send our T&Cs when you book), but if you let us know in advance we can usually move your dates as needed. Since we work on shoots ourselves, we know that things often change.
-
Is there anything else I need to know?
Once you make a booking, we will send you a more detailed document with lots more information, and our terms and conditions.
